Yesterday was a historic moment for the United States. Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President and the first African American President. On one hand I am glad to see the world embrace a person of color as the leader and face of our nation. On the other, I can’t help but feel that he was simply elected based on the color of his skin and not the content of his character. This in and of itself isn’t a horrible thing. He ran on a platform of hope and change and I hope he makes good on those promises and I hope the changes that he offers up benefit all Americans and truly do improve our nation as a whole.

While talking over dinner about the inaugaration, my wife brought up a good point that those of us in the gaming world are all too familiar with; Hype. How often has a good game been crushed underneath the weight of the hype? How often have games actually lived up to the pre-release hype? Almost never.

Parlay that same logic to Obama and he’s going to have to show up Washington and Lincoln just for people to think he lived up to the monumental expectations that have been set forth for him. I don’t buy into Obama’s politics and I didn’t vote for him, but he’s the leader of our nation for good or for bad. That said, I can’t help but feel that he is doomed to failure and he’s only been on the job for 23 hours.

Only time will tell what will happen in this fair nation. I’m remaining optimistic that this isn’t a slight of hand that results in our nation being worse off than before. I’ll admit though, I’m awfully nervous about what the future holds.
