That’s exactly it. I think people with this type of outlook tend to not do jobs that others would consider menial simply because their drive for excellence allows them to advance.

It’s funny, because you can tell within just a few minutes of working with someone what kind of outlook they have in regards to this idea. I remember from when I was a little kid, my mom used to tell both me and my brother something very similar. “It didn’t matter if we grew up to be garbagemen, as long as we were the best garbagemen possible.” That’s something I’ve always carried with me in everything I do whether it was waiting tables or working in radio, and I think that is one of the reasons I’ve been relatively successful in everything I do. It’s too bad not enough people live their life the same way.

True. Missed you guys in Cali this summer. However, that is no reason we can’t see eachother more. Your only an hour away! It’s ridiculous- I know. I am glad to see the family doing so well and that you had such a great birthday

Well Christopher….Life has thrown me many of curveballs as well! Maybe it’s my turn to take it on for a while. Don’t get me wrong, I have a very nice life filled with loving people and engaging friends. It’s just, whenever you think you have finally made it through and figured it all out, it starts all over again. Things were going so well- We were home from PA, working on building a successful future and then I get laid off, my sibling’s Grandmother passes away, our employee steals from the company and we have to press charges and I get a major infection all over my legs! Then we are back on track with paying off ALL debt and the business starting to pick up and finally making some profit! Now, with the business sold, still NO job and recent heart problems- I find myself asking…”What I am meant to do with all of this?” I know that he only fills your glass with what he knows you can handle and I try very hard to remind myself of that. However, sometimes it just doesn’t add up. It certainly is good to know that I am not alone out there with the same wonders. Thanks for sharing

@Phil That sounds like way too much work. I guess I’d rather pay for 2 years of backups than buy a drive. Probably sounds crazy that I have no external drives at this point, but I don’t. that said, I don’t have nearly 300GB of data either. I think I’m only backing up important data like family pictures and financial data at like 30GB.

@Tom Yeah, they changed it not too long ago. If you look at the offering now though it is drastically improved. You can use Cloud Files or S3 (CF is cheaper; no bandwidth costs) and you can make use of the Limelight CDN if you’d like to.

Jungle Disk used to be a fixed $20 price which brought you free upgrades for life. I guess they’ve gotten successful enough to move to a subscription based model, which is a shame as it seems like somewhat less of a bargain now compared with other solutions.

last year, i started using CrashPlan (http://www.crashplan.com/) and i haven’t looked back since. it’s got everything you’d expect… encryption, alerting, backup diffs, continuous backup, multi-platform, etc. the personal version is a one-time purchase for either the basic or “+” version depending on your needs. the software supports multiple backup locations at once (another attached drive, another computer on your LAN, another computer offsite, or a friend’s computer). the software itself is rock solid and easy to use (i’ve had to do minor restores).

i back up my laptop and home server and the best part about it for me is that once i’ve purchase the software and my own backup drives, my costs are done… no monthly fee, no annual support, no offsite backup charge per GB. i love how cheap Cloud Files is, but with more than 300GB to backup (and counting), even $0.01/GB/month starts to add up. AND, since CrashPlan supports local backup portability, i can back everything up on my home network, take my backup drives to my office (my remote location), connect them to my target PC, and “instantly” my data is uploaded offsite. then, only the diffs are sent over the wire.

i promise, i’m not a shill for them :p. buy the software and a backup drive Chris, and i’ll be your offsite host.
